ISOLATION KITS – Yes, No, Maybe?

When installing underwater lights on a boat, you may come across the recommendation to use an isolation kit. For many boat owners this raises questions: Do I need one? What does it do? Will it affect my lights? The good news is that isolation kits are simple, common components and nothing to worry about.

What Is an Isolation Kit?

An isolation kit is a set of non-conductive components, which could include bushings, sleeves, screws and washers used when mounting underwater lights through the hull. Its purpose is to isolate the metal parts of the light fitting from the hull material.
This helps prevent unwanted interaction between dissimilar materials in the marine environment.

When Is an Isolation Kit Required?

An isolation kit is generally required when installing underwater lights on a metal hull. Metal hulls can conduct electricity, so isolating the light fitting helps prevent galvanic corrosion or stray current issues.

If your boat has a metal hull, an isolation kit is typically recommended or required by the light manufacturer.

Hull Materials That May Require an Isolation Kit

Isolation kits are most commonly used with the following hull types:

  • Aluminium hulls

  • Steel hulls

  • Wooden hulls

  • Other conductive metal hulls

In these cases, the kit ensures the light fitting does not create an electrical path between the light and the hull.

Hull Materials That Usually Do NOT Require an Isolation Kit

Boats built from non-conductive materials typically do not need an isolation kit. These include:

  • Fibreglass (GRP)

  • Composite hulls

Because these materials do not conduct electricity in the same way as metal, electrical isolation is generally unnecessary.

Will an Isolation Kit Affect the Installation?

Not at all. Isolation kits are designed to integrate seamlessly with the light installation. They do not change how the light operates and will not affect brightness, performance, or reliability.

In most cases, installation is almost identical, the kit simply sits between the light fitting and the hull to provide the necessary insulation.

The Bottom Line

Isolation kits are a simple precaution used primarily for metal hull boats. They help protect the hull and the light fitting from potential corrosion issues while having no impact on the light’s performance or appearance.

If your boat has an aluminium or steel hull, an isolation kit is a small addition that ensures your underwater lights remain reliable for years to come.
