Do underwater lights attract fish?

Yes, underwater lights can attract fish.

The formal answer is, while there is only a limited amount of formal scientific research on the subject, both observational studies and long-standing practical use in marine environments suggest that underwater lighting can increase fish activity around illuminated areas.

The less formal answer is, if you’ve ever been out on a boat where the water is clear enough to see what’s going on around you, you will know fish begin appearing within a couple of minutes of turning on your underwater lights.

How do underwater lights attract fish?

Simple food-chain process…we think…

1.    Light attracts plankton and microscopic organisms

2.    Small baitfish gather to feed on the plankton

3.    Larger predatory fish arrive to hunt the baitfish

Over time, this creates a feeding zone around the illuminated area, which is why underwater lights are often used around docks, boats and fishing locations.

In clear water and calm conditions, this effect can sometimes be seen quite quickly, as small fish begin to gather in the light.

Which underwater light colour is best for attracting fish?

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

In general, blue or green underwater lights are considered the most effective for attracting fish. Blue and green wavelengths travel well through water. For this reason, blue and green lights are widely used in fishing environments.

The answer to your question…

While scientific research is still relatively limited, practical experience and observations consistently show that underwater lights can attract fish.
